On the state level, corporate interests like Nike are pushing to remove PSU and OU from the Oregon University System, instead setting up the schools as corporations with private boards, allowing monied-interests to have more influence over the universities.
Locally, the PSU administration refuses to fund the popular student-led and taught Chiron Studies program. Overall, we are seeing a coordinated effort to corporatize higher education. Join students and workers across Oregon are fighting back.
Chiron Studies is a unique program at PSU where students can learn from other students and earn college credit. The program generates money for the school because the student teachers and participants both pay for classes that would not otherwise be available. Chiron is widely supported by students, faculty, and staff at PSU.
Last week, the Student Action Coalition (StAC) held a lively rally in support of Chiron Studies. Students and supporters went into the Office of the Provost, where the Assistant Provost assured them they were listening to student input. However, yesterday it was revealed the administration will not seek to fund Chiron Studies this year. This heightens the urgent need for action to support this critical program and meet the needs of students at PSU.
This is an attack on democracy and student-leadership at PSU!
Join students, workers, and allies at a rally on Thursday at 1 in the Park Blocks behind Smith Memorial Union to save Chiron Studies! Please bring pots and pans because we are going to make some noise!
